It has happened to all of us, expectations are not fulfilled and we wonder why. The truth is, we are responsible for empowering our employees to do their job so they can be successful. We wish new employees were up and running in a blink but we rarely ask ourselves if that is actually feasible. We can’t expect new hires to absorb new pieces of information in a day, it’s not realistic. Employees have to know the scope of tasks that they will perform in their job and it is our responsibility to empower them As a former ESL teacher in Argentina, I’ve supported my students in order to strengthen learning by giving assistance and facilitating their incremental mastery of a concept. On the job site, a similar approach can be applied, where core responsibilities transition from simple to complex, what teachers call the Scaffolding Method. New employees should be able to improve, task after task, becoming proficient. Starting with simple goals so they can experience all the steps in their particular work and manage a trade at a small level. At the same time, they should be involved in a bigger and more important one so they can learn from it.With that said, these are what StructionSite considers important for the onboarding process.

  • Identify the type of learner your new hire is, we don’t all learn the same way.
  • Grant access to all necessary tools that will be used. There is nothing more frustrating than starting a new position and not being able to do your job due to lack of access
  • Offer training on specific tools that each individual will use, include short video tutorials that can help as a reference if these tools are software related. Educate them!
  • Provide a clear list of tasks that will be performed at each level of construction as well as clear expectations.
  • Set up office hours so new employees can connect with a supervisor and get questions answered.
  • Offer a matrix of skills that will allow new employees to move to a new role.
  • Last but not least, check progress constantly.
